January 30, 2012 - 1st Meeting!

Please note – these minutes may miss significant issues/topics that were raised, as they are being reconstructed by memory, as we hadn’t decided to take minutes as of yet when we held this meeting
The 12 steps of Transition were reviewed.
Interests were voiced:
Networking area efforts to go green
Creating a bike friendly town via bike lanes
Choosing a project and jumping in with getting it up and running
     The deep nature connection perspective
Getting campus student “green” groups involved
Ideas Exchanged:
Possibility of getting a speaker ( esp Chris Martenson) and/or doing a film screening  potentially combined w/ an event as a means of addressing the raising awareness step.  Bill Nelson following up on CM as speaker.
Combining SU’s Earth Day w/ the Salisbury Zoo’s Earth Day.
Student projects/classwork assisting w/ goals.
State legislation makes it tough for organic farmer’s to thrive on a small scale due to regulations.  Previous effort of local organic farmers to create an information network to locate local supplies is ending before completion.
Building a liason w/ local government is important.  Invite other SU dept faculty to participate to create a broad community stakeholder approach: include community members, faculty, students, and gather lists of folks to invite and groups to partner with.
Tom Horton has many local environmental contacts.
Room space - event space can be arranged at SU.
Wondering about the impact of local big agri-businesses on potential  efforts of a TT movement (the politics involved & how to be aware of and handle that).
Meeting again in 1 week, same time/place.
(Recorded by Elizabeth Marshall)
